INTRODUCTION
Whether preparing for a performance or just having fun making music together, the popularity of the Zoom-Jamulus combination has sky-rocketed with musicians of all types
…because it works!
So it’s time for IDC to change it up too.
These rehearsals will be nothing like the passive muted rehearsals held on zoom-only in the past..
The addition of Jamulus software means that we can all sing like a choir, actually hearing each other and being heard, during our Zoom rehearsal.
Brian plans to use Jamulus to rehearse for our Salamanca concert, this will be especially important if you have missed a live Singing Day/Weekend
This will require some simple advance preparation but don’t worry our Tekky Tenors, Columb and Neil, are going to help us all to get set up.
SET UP
THREE absolute essentials …
- a laptop or desktop computer with Jamulus installed .
- plugged in (wired) earbuds or headphones
- good wifi ( preferably via ethernet cable)
ONE highly desirable ..
- An external microphone ( simple ones often work best for this, ask the tekky guys for advice)
GET CONNECTED
DO THESE IN ORDER..
- Make sure that you have a strong Wifi signal
- Plug in your headphones and an external microphone ( if using) – Don’t unplug anything until your session is over or you may have to start everything again!
- Open Jamulus then ( first time only) Click the Settings Cog then enter your first name and voice type etc
- Join Zoom* and mute or ‘leave audio’ before connecting to the Jamulus server ( see below). Zoom is mainly to have a visual contact of each other. It can work even better to open Zoom on a second device, worth considering if you encounter problems.
- Join Zoom Meeting

Passcode: 999
- Join Zoom Meeting
- Hit the Connect button on Jamulus. You will see a window to type in a server ( this information will be supplied at the start of your session)
- You are always in control of your Jamulus interface- use the Mute Yourself button in the event of problems..then no one can hear you while you work out how to fix it (see below).
- If you are just experimenting at home alone, choose an empty public server from the drop down list on the connect screen
PROBLEMS? WHAT YOU NEED TO FIX THINGS IS PROBABLY HERE
See the comprehensive guide below but if you need more help in advance, please ask on IDC Spring Optimists Whatsapp group.

And finally remember that , you cannot participate in these rehearsals on Zoom without Jamulus but you can participate on Jamulus without Zoom !
And when in doubt MUTE YOURSELF ( like all good singers!!!)
