Information about the day from Brian MacKay …

Today we meet the ‘Music and Destiny’ programme that the choir will be focusing on this year.

We will spend some time with Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen , Brahms at his lyrical, positive best. We will explore Schicksalslied, a  lesser known but equally wonderful work by Brahms, how it came to be written and how Brahms struggled with the text. We get an overview and learn the first section. If time permits we may also look at  a few short passages from Selig Sind, the famous opening movement of the Requiem.

In his early career, Ralph Vaughan-Williams wrote a setting of Walt Whitman’s poem “Darest thou now, O soul“, apparently drawn to it’s humanism and mysticism. Over one hundred years  later, Toward the Unknown Region still speaks powerfully. Many of the choir sang this at the Guildhall, Derry in 2022. Almost as many choir members , courtesy of the omicron variant of covid and other winter illnesses, learned the music but missed the performance. Setting great poetry to music is recognised as challenging: Why did Vaughan-Williams choose this poem and what where his solutions?

We are grateful to the Board & Management of the Royal Hospital Donnybrook for their hospitality. We hope to give a very short Pop Up performance for residents and carers ( probably Wie Lieblich..) at the close of the day.
